When it is dark. Pray that your shadows are darker than theirs.
In the great shadow of the gas giant, eldritch horrors from deep within the Astral Sea dwell hidden from the withering light of Knopsis. While Rami feels no love for these creatures that would love to feast on their people, the God has no choice but to leave their people helpless and utterly at the mercy of the long nights spent in the shadow. But a shadow is a two-way shield, and so Rami created the Titan of Shadows, and the Shadows of Shadows, Uumatar, to offer mortals some protection.
Uumatar forged the Shadowfell from the darkness of Rami’s shadow, creating a veil not only in the physical world, but in the hearts and minds of the vulnerable people who would otherwise be prey. The Eldrachii seek their prey not only by sight, on wavelengths of light far beyond comprehension, but also by thought. And so the Shadowfell was created to offer complete darkness. A place to hide physically and mentally from worse horrors. However, the Shadowfell is a sickening place, hostile to life itself, and a haven for undead who wish to hide from their fate in the roaring heart of Knopsis. Many who spend too long there go mad, the crevices of their brains clogged with sticky shadows that should have been washed away once the real danger has passed.
As a result Uumatar is worshipped as a protector, especially to the hunted, and by thieves who use the Shadowfell, and shadows of shadows to hide and escape. However they are also a God of Madness, Evil and the Undead, and although some debate this charge, it has been said that one of the first signs of madness to arise from Shadow-sickness, are hallucinations and whispers temping those who see and hear them to ever more morally dubious choices, ultimately leading to a death worthy of incineration.
Uumatar slumbers in the dark depths of Shem.
